Today my office hosted a Senior Scam Stopper at the South Coast Botanic Garden. Thank you to the Contractors State Licensing Board, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, the California Department of Insurance, the Bureau of Household Goods and Services, IRS TAP, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Seniors Fight Back for their great presentations and training on avoiding scams targeting seniors. Thank you to the South Coast Botanic Garden for your partnership!
Today, I joined Los Angeles Councilmember Councilmember Tim McOsker, Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson, the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, faith and local leaders to call on getting ICE out of Terminal Island and out of LA.
ICE is going after hard working immigrants and their families, not criminals. They are being rounded up and incarcerated like the Japanese Americans who once lived on Terminal Island more than 80 years ago - hard-working immigrants who were scapegoated and wrongfully accused of being a threat to national security. As Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, I am fighting to keep ICE out of California public schools, and today, I join the fight to get ICE out of Terminal Island. Terminal Island should never again become a symbol of injustice.
Terminal Island was once home to a thriving fishing village where 3,000 individuals of Japanese descent were forcibly removed by the federal government in 1942 following the signing of Executive Order 9066.
Beautiful Saturday afternoon in Gardena celebrating Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI)’s Annual Matsuri! GVJCI is a non-profit community center housing various classes, services, and programs for seniors, non-senior adults, and youth in the South Bay for over 40 years. Their mission is to serve the needs of the local Japanese American community through educational, cultural, and social programs that share the Japanese and Japanese American cultural heritage. Thank you Executive Direcror Alison Kochiyama for the invitation!
I met with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell, Congressional Members, California Senate Pro Tempore Kevin McGuire, California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, Los Angeles area State Senators and Assemblymembers to discuss the ICE raids happening in our communities and the presence of the military in our streets.
We held a press conference following our meeting to end the politicization of California by the Administration and demanded due process for those swept up in the ICE raids. We also called to end the stoking of fear by having the California National Guard and marines presence.
#FightforSchools rally at SpaceX to protest Trump-Musk attacking public education and defunding our schools, impacting our most vulnerable kids like special education, low income, immigrant, LGBTQ students.
Great to join teachers from throughout LA County in solidarity!
I posthumously honored Dr. Kanji Sahara of Torrance at the California Legislature’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month ceremony this past week.
Kanji was the driving force behind the World War II Camp Memorial being built in Torrance to remember the over 120,000 Japanese Americans who were wrongfully incarcerated in internment camps during the war.
Representing Kanji is his daughter Judy and her husband Ben, and Kanji's grandchildren Kaitlyn, Kristin, and Nicole.
